The highest calling

Just came across a great article in the Discovery magazine (Issue 41) written by Proffesor Tim Nokes. I have attached a few quotes from the article just to encourage coaches and to help us realize that our 4 hours in the sun is extremly important in the greater scheme of things.

"To be a coach, all our actions must be beyond ethical reproach. Over a lifetime, coaches who behave without ethical constraint will not extract the full potential from those entrusted to their care. For unethical behaviours undermine respect and trust, without which the coach is powerless to direct his or her athletes towards the path of hardship - the only sure route to lasting success. Great coaches teach that the only actions worth doing are those that are right.

"Great coaches understand that the impossible is just a state of mind; the impossible is only that which has not yet been achieved."

"The coach who lacks the passion  to work as hard as anyone else cannot expect his athletes to understand the value of working harder than their opponents."

"The great coaches do not care who recieves the credit for success, provided that all are working in persuit of perfection"

And the final characteristic is to understand that sport is not even about winning; it is not even about sport. As Tony Dungy, the first African-American coach to win the Super Bowl, has written 'But winning the Super Bowl is not the ultimate victory. And once again, just to make sure we're on the same page, it's not all about football. It's about the journey - mine and yours- and the lives we can teach, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better'

He ends the article by saying "the greatest compliment on earth is to be called coach" so lets go out there and embrace our greatness
