The history of man is closely interlinked with sport, all cultures across the world have developed physical games providing the opportunity for man to measure himself against another. Today the impact of sport across the world is measured in millions.
So where do I fit into the greater scheme of things?
(With my 18 thirteen year old girls armed with Field Hockey Sticks, my grunting group of 11 year old boys all convinced that they are the next Bryan Habbana, my adorable 7year old's all insisting that they just hit a six, and my "boys to men" water polo team who's confusion at this age is only rivaled by their aggression.)Let me tell you, I believe right here.
Anybody who finds themselves in a position where they are required to coach a group of kids, even those who where forced to do so as part of community service or by a Headmaster, who just does not understand how hard teachers work, are afforded an unbelievable opportunity. Few other opportunities allows you the privilege to impact on an individuals life, and therefore life in general, as coaching will. Recently there has been a explosion of "Life Coaches" I believe they are no different than your "common, Run of the Mill" u9 Rugby coach. School Sport is nothing but a microcosm of a school community and the community in general, all the challenges of life: highlights, disappointments, interpersonal connections and conflicts, following and leading, falling and getting up but also flying and falling, splashed across a canvas of green grass and framed by a chalk border. Today I had one of my 12 yr old girls, who was a junior in this years water polo team, mom say to me that her daughter had said to her that her greatest dream is to captain the team next year, ironically I had already earmarked her as the potential captain. how amazing to be in a position to make dreams come true.
