Keeping the Width

Keeping the Width
Corner Goals
Teaching young players to use the whole space available to them is a big challenge, not only does it make being marked easier but the congestion in the middle third often lead to players getting in each other’s way (which lead to more infringements) One way of getting players wide is to play a game, in this case across one quarter, with two goals for each side situated in the corners, as indicated by the red cones. Depending on one’s numbers you could play half or full field version of the game.
What skills are practiced?
ðObviously all aspects of game play
ðDefending and attacking

What is learned?
ð The corner goals force the players to rethink their utilization of space.
ð The fact that there are 2 goals makes the players “switch”, changing play from side to side, more often.

What can go wrong?
(Things going wrong provide the best learning opportunities)
ðDefenders tend to congest the area in front of the goals, to avoid this award a goal if a defender incurs a foot fault in front of goals.

How to get more out?
ðPut all four goals into play, a player may score in any of the four goals, a fun game which makes ball possession essential.
